The sun doesn't shine at night so if you want to be able to disconnect from the grid at night you'll need to have batteries to store the power you generate in the day. You'll also need to have enough excess capacity during the day to charge up the batteries and that probably won't be happening all the time even if you cover your roof with panels. You might want to find out where the power from the wall comes from to see how bad it actually is. Probably not.
