Landscape lighting - hard-wired electrical vs solar-powered?

By admin | April 17, 2008

taxmannyc asked:

Electrical line is already available so what are pros and cons other than ease of installation for solar-powered? This is for a walkway from our driveway to front steps.
Also, how about low-voltage vs normal voltage?

I have researched solar power and still wonder why it isn’t used more in the usa?

By admin | April 13, 2008

lisa f asked:

I have posted similar question before about solar power and asking why the usa hasn’t done worth spit in geting more solar power.
A 100 sqr ft of solar panel durring full sun makes roughly 1kw.
Solar powered water heaters are an excellent alternative to standard water heaters.
Cost wise some states are helping with paying some of the cost and tax rebates from fed government side help some. Plus some states give grantes to home owners and possibly companies.

I have done research, I am writing a book (not directly on solar power, but has info about solar power and other alternatives for power mentioned in it) and I am still researching, asking questions, talking to people to make informed writing in my book as well as what I am putting up here.

There is also geothermal for heating and cooling which is much better than a nuclear plant or a coal plant for such. Solar power is effective (mostly).

What do you think is the biggest cause of usa not being more solar powered?
Cost wise, there are grants. As for not being able to take the panels with you, you ar wrong a person can take them with them.

AS for expensive yes it is, but there are grants in many states as well as some fed write offs. Granted they don’t take the major bite off the cost, but they help and remember this gas and electric companies are going up in price not down (majority anyhow) and will continue to go up in cost.

Thank you for your responses from afar, for I don’t know much about other countries except a little about germany, they are doing the best at solar power.

As for geothermal, pipes running under your house into the ground carrying a liquid can be used to cool or heat a house.

And I am sure I I don’t yet know about all the “green” ideas, nor do I have the space here to write about them. But I will try to put as much factual info into my book as possible.

Again I thank you for responses and I am not criticising any one for I am asking for a persons view.
A very wise comparison Mary B. I recall seeing the property value increase you mentioned, but I didn’t think to put that into my information.

It also sounds as if you have researched solar power a fair sight.

I am presently researching solar power as I said previously, but also because I intend on using it in the next house we buy. And I must admit I don’t know much about how to go about finding out about state programs and so forth that you mentioned..I would appreciate in finding out more if you don’t mind.

Also may I use your response in my writings?

What do i need to do to run my garden electrics (pond Pumps & Garden Lighting) from a solar panel?

By admin | April 12, 2008

recycleeasy asked:

I run 2 pond pumps and 4 sets of garden lighting through my electricity supply and would like to change this so it runs from solar power panels on top of my garage roof.
Can anyone give me advice on what size panels I need, how many and how i actually install this.
Please help as I would love to cut down my carbon footprint but want to keep my garden looking pretty.

Solar Power??

By admin | April 11, 2008

shizzle asked:

Okay. I have two rhymes promoting solar power.
pick which one you like better.
or if you think they’re both stupid, then
make up one yourself.

number 1:

solar is better. to preserve how much the world’s worth; it powers many objects and energizes the earth.

number 2:

solar power is the way to go. it energizes the world more than you know.

thanks :)

How expensive IS solar power?

By admin | April 11, 2008

Noah H asked:

Expense of a product is generally a function of units produced. Basically, the more the cheaper..(let’s not get into the price of pills!) Almost all of the US ’stationary energy’ could be produced by solar. Several years ago an article in Popular Mechanics stated that about 1,000 sq. miles of solar panels, at the state of the art at that time, would do the trick. That’s about 100 miles on a side. Of course all the panels wouldn’t have to be in a one place…many of them could be on commercial buildings or private homes. The subsidies and tax breaks granted to the coal and gas industries makes their power ‘cheaper’ until you add in the costs of pollution and health problems associated with coal power. The same tax breaks could make solar cheaper without the added expenses assumed by tax paid cleanup costs. Certainly cheaper than nuke power. Solar for power…gas and maybe coal for backup. Wadda’ ‘ya say?

Does anyone know the relationship between the sun’s angle of incidence and the amount of heat lost? And if possible, relate it to current.. Thanks!

Solar Power??????

By admin | April 7, 2008

ilikeplayingsoccer asked:

World Solar Production
Total peak power of installed solar panels is around 5,300 MW as of the end of 2005. (IEA statistics appear to be underreported: they report 2,600 MW as of 2004, which with 1,700 installed in 2005 would be a cumulative total of 4,300 for 2005). These figures include only photovoltaic generated power and not that produced by other solar means. Inclusion of the U.S.’s solar reflector plants would double its total, putting it at the level of the second place country on the list.
Can soomeone please tell me what the MW stands for?
