By admin | October 30, 2007
A continuously operating FM radio transmitter with a power output of 1250 W at 99.7 MHz is to be installed in a remote location in South America. Solar power is considered as the most suitable source of power for this transmitter. The transmitter building consumes 1 kW of power for general building upkeep that includes lighting and other office applications.
i. If the transmitter converts only half of its input power to radio frequency, what is the power required by the transmitter to generate the rated transmit power?
ii. Estimate the total power required by this station.
iii. Assume AM1.5 conditions and that the angle of sun’s incident rays to the vertical is 600. Under worst conditions, sun shines for a maximum of 4 hours/day. Calculate the required area of solar panels for reliable operation of the transmitter throughout the year.
