We were thinking about switching to solar power for heat? How much and where to start?

You home is most likely poorly insulated. To try to do this with solar, which does not work to begin with, will be very expensive. But then you home may be down south where heating is not that hard.
Your best be is to insulate the attic as much as possible make sure you have good windows and doors, and go with a high eff. heat pump, that way you also have AC in the summer.
